Theme Park Thursdays feature photos from one of our theme park adventures in the past.
In honor of the final flight of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, STS-135, which launches on Friday, here's a nice tribute to America's space program found in The American Adventure pavilion over at Epcot's World Showcase. While you are waiting for the namesake show, you'll find paintings like this one situated on the walls, each denoting different elements of the history of the United States. I snapped this photo on a September 2007 visit.
Of note is the use of NASA's "Worm" logo, which was used from 1975-1992. The agency returned to its "Meatball" logo thereafter, which was previously used from 1959-1974.
Long live the Shuttle!
I like both the worm and the meatball for different reasons. I also like that in the mural has 4 shuttles as if NASA could ever get one functioning let alone multiple ones simultaneously.
After the Columbia disaster, NASA actually did work to have a 2nd Shuttle ready to go to "rescue" the crew if needed. The idea would be that the crew would stay on the International Space Station and wait for a 2nd Shuttle to arrive, commanded by a minimal crew of just 2 people. They would then be brought back to Earth. The damaged Shuttle would be abandoned in space. Luckily, this process hasn't been needed.
