As I mentioned in my post about BevReview business cards, I recently attended the National Restaurant Association show here in Chicago to check out what was on display in the world of beverages. I was joined by my friend Nicko Sahlas, founder of BevReview's partner site ChefTalk.com, as we explored the thousands of exhibitors showcasing their products and services.

Steve & Nicko

Now, the NRA show (not to be confused with that "other NRA") is primarily focused on the foodservice industry, restaurants, and hotels/motels, so when it comes to the beverage side of things, everything is filtered through that perspective. Here at BevReview.com we take a look at the non-alcoholic side of the coin, thus we didn't dig into the Wine, Spirits, & Beer Event that was taking place as part of the convention.

I'm going to be writing reviews on many of the beverages we tried at the show, so keep an eye on BevReview.com in the coming weeks for that. While the "Big 3" were in attendance (The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Dr Pepper Snapple Group), it often was the smaller brands that had the most interesting products and stories. I'm hoping to spotlight a lot of these brands and hopefully introduce something to diversify your tastes! It was a lot of fun to get out from "behind the screen" to talk to the folks that bring these items to market, from owners to distributors to marketing & PR folks.

As we gear up to write about many of these beverages, here's just a taste of what we saw…

This coming weekend I'm heading to the National Restaurant Association show down at McCormick Place here in Chicago. The "Food Show" is always a fun event to attend, as I've been able to go in the past as a guest with some of the food service management I used to work with when I attended Taylor University. During college, as part of my student loan work program, I spent 4 years in the Dining Commons… and probably learned more about management and leadership than I'd ever learn from books today.

In any case, this year is a bit different as I'm attending on behalf of that good ole beverage review site I run, BevReview.com. That site launched as a "proof of concept" in summer 2007 and has actually done pretty well against the goals we had in place. So last year I had to make some decisions regarding the future of the site. After all, BevReview is a "side project" beyond my regular job doing the Web Producer thing for Kidology. Upon discussing options with my partner Nicko Sahlas, who runs ChefTalk.com, we looked at either continuing to do things 'as is' or try to take it to the next level. I chose the latter.

Stock photos of bottles can only take you so far

Part of that strategy has been to actually develop an identity, logo, and "look & feel" for BevReview as we increase the site's visibility. We're now interacting with quite a few companies on a professional level, reviewing new products, running contests, etc. In addition, when it comes to readership, I really wanted to differentiate the site to reflect a consumer-friendly/advocate point of view and push forward the idea of online community — something that I've always felt was important when working online.

Our friends at Hexanine

The first salvo in this strategy was working with Tim Lapetino and his design/identity firm Hexanine to come up with a brand for BevReview. The output of that collaboration is starting to be seen via the business cards I'll be taking with me to the food show this weekend, as they feature a new logo and look for the BevReview brand. Eventually, we'll be deploying these elements to the site itself and our social media extensions, but I wanted to provide you with a little "preview."

There's more to come, so stay tuned!

It's that time of year again. That's right, time to find the "good pop." That is, Kosher for Passover versions of Coke and Pepsi. These are considered awesome because they use real sugar as sweeteners instead of high fructose corn syrup. I'm not Jewish, but this Kosher stuff is awesome!

Note the yellow caps to denote Kosher

This year, the demand isn't as great, I feel, because we've been blessed by similar drinks in the form of Pepsi Throwback, Mountain Dew Throwback, and Heritage Dr Pepper. But still, as a beverage enthusiast, it was time to make a "Kosher run!"

Sucrose = Sugar

I've previously reviewed Kosher Coke, Kosher Pepsi, and even Kosher Caffeine Free Pepsi for BevReview.com, so I don't need to go into that here. This year, I went with my friend George up to Hungarian Kosher Foods in Skokie where they can always be counted on to have the Kosher drinks. And sure enough, I walked away with some 2 liters of Coke and CF Pepsi.

Kosher Bazooka Gum

But even more interesting was the box of Kosher Bazooka Gum that George walked away with. It had a very different taste, in my opinion, though to be honest I can't remember the last time I actually chewed Bazooka. (Michael Ei$ner now owns Bazooka's parent company, so maybe that's a reason!)

Beyond that, it was somewhat funny to find that the enclosed Bazooka Joe comic was written in Hebrew. I'm not sure what's happening in the comic. Care to give a guess? (Make sure you read from right to left!)
