The idea would be that the crew would stay on the International Space Station and wait for a 2nd Shuttle to arrive, commanded by a minimal crew of just 2 people. They would then be brought back to Earth. The damaged Shuttle would be abandoned in space. Luckily, this process hasn't been needed.
